On Monday, AWS announced a significant addition to its cloud infrastructure by acquiring a nuclear-powered datacenter campus from Talen Energy for $650 million. This move not only expands AWS’s datacenter footprint but also underscores its commitment to sustainability and carbon-neutral energy sources.

The Cumulus Datacenter: A Nuclear Powerhouse

Located adjacent to Talen’s 2.5 gigawatt Susquehanna nuclear power plant in northeast Pennsylvania, the Cumulus datacenter initially boasted 48 megawatts of capacity. With plans to expand to 475 megawatts, Amazon’s acquisition could further scale the facility, integrating it seamlessly into its vast cloud empire.

Financial Terms and Future Plans

The deal’s structure allows Talen Energy to receive $350 million upfront, with an additional $300 million tied to development milestones throughout 2024. Moreover, AWS secures direct access to the nuclear plant’s output, potentially utilizing up to 960 megawatts, with an option to limit its commitment to 480 megawatts.
